  1. technically you can,

just join a judo or bjj or gjj gym or tae kwon do or hapkido gym.

they offer black belt advancement and you never have to set foot in a "karate" class.

  2. yes u can do that

if u fight for something that is really...................really great...or loved by u or sm1 really close to u..............u will be a black belter for them for whom u have taken the risk to fight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  3. Just check out the section right next to "How to become an NFL quarterback without ever playing football."  I think it's somewhere near the "Become a certified Master Mechanic without ever touching a car" books.

  4. You can just buy a black belt if you like, it'd take just a couple of seconds.

Now, if you want to EARN one, you cannot do so without training in a dojo, as you have to show proficiency during classes.

  5. I realize that this is the internet generation, but you cannot learn to defend yourself or learn a martial art on line, from books, or DVDs. These are all great for supplementing your training if you already study and have good basics. however in order to really learn a martial art you need these things:

    1) An instructor that can give you feed back on how you are doing and correct your mistakes. Even slight flaws can make a technique not work.

    2) People to practice on that will resist you, so that you have to do the technique right.

Without these two things all you will really have are fancy moves that are inn effective.

This is the reason they don't train soldiers or cops by video, it just doesn't work. Sorry if this bursts your bubble but it is the truth.

Find a good class and train hard.

  6. No. If you want to learn to swim you have to get in the water. If you want to learn to drive you have to get behind the wheel of the car. If you want to learn and advance in any martial art you have to learn from a qualified instructor. Books may help but it's not the same as having a good teacher there to guide you. Believe me, I've tried that approach and it just left me more frustrated.

And If you just want a black belt just go out and buy one.

  7. no

  8. No.

You may become an "expert" but attaining a belt requires eyes on training and testing by a teacher.

The big problem with training on your own is that you may be making simple mistakes and learning how to do something incorrectly.

  9. If your talking about being a black belt at karate. No. You can learn a lot from books, videos and friends but not everything. Lots of ppl get better by being in a class so they don't have to work out the moves on their own. Plus you need to be in a class to actually take the belt tests.

  10. There is no "easy" way to become a black belt. Anyone can go out and grab a book from the library, read through it and call themself a blackbelt. But very few books cover all the techniques you would learn in any one art.

Even if you manage to find a book with "everything" in it, the biggest problem will be learning to properly execute the technique. Much of a martial arts class is drilling a technique over and over with a partner while the teacher corrects little mistakes in your form.

If you really have the time and dedication, find a couple clubs in your area and try them on for size. Find one you like and invest your time and dedication there. I guarantee it will be a lot more fun and a lot more rewarding when you finally do get your black belt.

  11. So if I understand you correctly your asking if you can be a black belt without ever learning from a real Karate teacher? Yeah about as well as you can learn to do brain surgery from the library.DVDs' and books are great for reference material only. Not to actually learn from. With out hands on knowledge and direction from a certified teacher to test your skills, how will you ever know what your actual skill level is. You state that you have the time and dedication. Well then I suggest you use that time to find a quality instructor and put that dedication to use.

  12. They only way you can become a black belt is taking in everything you know about a martial art and being able apply it.

A black belt is a rank meaning Kung Fu in that art (Kung Fu: higest level of achievement). You've covered not only the physical part, the mental part and its concepts, and spiritual part as well. You can master it and be able to apply these techniques in the air but even a black belt doesn't make him/her a master yet. A black belt is simply the beginning step of his/her journey to master everything he/she knows.

In other words, you need a live master who is willing to guide you and train you and push you to the limits. Not a book. By all means, buy the book and learn from it, the more you know the better, but what really matters is applying it.

A quote from the movie "Training Day" from Denzel Washington:

"Its not how much you know, its what you can prove"

  13. For some schools thats all they do every 3 months to a year is to hand out belts but myself i don't believe in that i mean the color of the belt its the knowledge that you obtain while studying the art and for years i might add as well however that it is possible to get a blackbelt yes but it took me from 1995 to 1998 to get my green then from 1998 to 2002 my brown so in all it took me like 6 yrs to 7 yrs to obtain my blackbelt and now that its 2008 and i'm a 4th degree black .

  14. haha. a book is not going to teach how to fight. it may explain and illustrate certain moves and techniques but how will you know if you are doing it correctly without someone with martial arts experience there besides you showing you how?

  15. 6 sigma course look it out they are expensive though

  16. Yes you can.

Go to a sports shop and buy one for £5.

  17. Of course you can! My friend has a black belt. he NEVER entered a karate dojo. Because he trains in tae kwon do.

    Short answer NO.

  18. it took me 4 yrs to become a black belt with intensive training and competition. there's no easy way or short cuts.

  19. You can't become an "official" black belt or any belt officially without testing from a sensei. But you can gain the knowledge and learn the katas and moves to be as good as a black belt.
