  1. Hi, as a fellow Aspie, I will have to say the truth to you. On one hand, YES! you can become a police officer and you will be a very good one, too as you care deeply for other people and have a very good sense of justice and fairness in you.

On the other hand, you will need to consider the "down side" of autism and AS, which is the stress and the emotional distress it can cause and how our brain has difficulty dealing with emotional stress and situations that include emotional stress.

What I am trying to say is that even as a police officer, you will need to learn to compromise and sometimes your sense of Right, Fair, Justice and Humanity will need to be curved, compromised, and misjudged. You might feel the need to push hard for what you belive is right, correct, just and this need can and will bring you into situations where you will not FOLLOW THE HERD!

In situations like that, being an Aspie is a problem because we can't compromise even if we see that doing that would be the best to do, and stick with the herd. We are loners, we will take the side of what we feel is right, correct and fair, instead of compromising and be one of the herd.

If you are forced to compromise, this will contrast your inner feelings and when this contrast occures, you will feel emotional stress. Make sure to have a good therapist who will be available to listen to your inner struggle, to your need for doing the right thing, and the greater need of what society considers the "right" thing. These two unfortunately do not match.

And when they do not, an Aspie stands alone in the middle. If you choose for the right thing you risk becoming an outcast, if you chose for society's "right" thing, you risk feeling uncomfortable in your job. Both situations end up in emotional stress. Make sure you cover that autism issue before you decide to proceed.

No matter what, I wish you lots of luck. I know you will be a good cop, and carry love and good will in your heart. If anything, you would be a far better detective than police officer. If you make sure to have a mentor who will recognize yout abilities to put clues other miss together, you will have someone to help you and even cover your back.

Just learn what to tell to others even if they seem to be your friends. The more you reveal the more others know.

  2. You can be whatever you want to be. If you want it bad enough.  I would like you to pick up a video called The Secret, its about law of attraction.  Please do a search  on-line for law of attraction and go from there.

  3. Yes, an "Aspie" can be a cop!!  You can do whatever you want to--it doesn't affect intelligence.  Maybe there is the tendency to not be the chattiest, have a lot of eye contact--or a big "people person," however, in my opinion, you don't need that to be a cop.  The tendency to not be swayed by others is a big help---you want to be objective and concentrating on the facts when you pull someone over etc.  Every person with Asperger's is different--I'm just commenting on common personality traits.  It may not be easy, but you can adapt...

Have you ever heard of Dr. Temple Grandin--successful engineer and professor?  Bill Gates is said to have Aspergers (along with Thomas Jefferson).  Brilliant people.  People with Aspergers.

  4. One of the most common professions for people with asperger's is a police officer. If you are worried, gather the information on all the requirements you will need to become a police officer, become familiar with them, and make sure you can do the physical tasks before you apply to the academy
