i am looking ta building a garage 24' x 22' to be used as a workshop/garage...i know i need a concrete base but my plan is to have this garage open no interior/dividing walls, i also want three garage doors two on the front wall and one on the back wall.

My questions

will concrete panels be strong enough to hold and support the roof? or should i use brick or something,

will the front wall be strong enough for two 7' doors ?

and which is the best kind of roof to use?

thank you for any help given

  1. get someone who knows what theyre at, as this could be too much for you, and dangerous for all around it.

you mentioned nothing of putting in foundations . .  . ?

  2. You need a proper design working out for this - it should be on proper footings or a raft, and it needs some calculation with regard to the roof design. Choice or roof covering will be determined by where you are - if completely flat, use a membrane, if it is pitched use profile sheeting, but you may run into planning problems bydint of the overall footprint.

This is not a small building and could be dangerous to you or your car. Bear in mind half the problem of roof design, especially with low pitches is wind suction - as much thought needs to go in to holding it down as well as holding it up. Get an engineer or architect to do a scheme, or opt for a system (if you are happy with conc panels) where they work it all out for you.

  3. My garage is 19' x 19' with two 7' doors and  personal door.

It is single leaf brick on a concrete base, with meaty catnic (steel) lintels over the 7' doors. The personal door has an angle iron as a lintel. All the roof timbers are 4"x2". However your 24' span is probably too much for a 4"x2" and you would either need to incorporate supporting piers or go up to 6"x2".

With regard to the roof. The lightest would probably be Eternit man made slates. These come in various sizes and shades. A light roof would of course help with your roof timber sizes. Try and get a look and photos of inside a neighbours garage. You will see that there are many variations in construction.
