Can i buy a dvr from ebay and just hook it up to the cable i have now?

i think we have comcast and i'm really tring to see if i can save some money by doing it myself so can i just buy a dvr and hook it up to my cable then to my tv and if so is it simple like just unscrewing the cable from the tv and hooking it into the dvr and then hooking the dvr up to the tv? and also recomendations for dvrs that would work well with my situation

no you need two have a dish from dtv

Even when you purchase your own DVR box, the cable company has to do something with programming the box so it will work in your area.  But you would not have to pay the monthly charge for renting the box from them.  The doen side of that is if it breaks the cable company doesnot have to replace it or fix it.  

From experience, you are better off getting the box from the cable company.  I have had DVR service for 3 years and the box has already been replaced twice.  It was free of charge to me because I pay the monthly fee.
