Can i change dollars into pounds in a UK bank?

somebody is going to give me a check ,but its in American dollars..

will i be able to change it at my bank in the UK?

will they be able to convert it for me?

  1. A cheque can only be paid into a bank account, if it is a UK account they will only accept Sterling cheques. You will need to open a foreign currency account.


  2. You can, just go into a branch and ask at the counter, there is a fee for this service and the bank can put a 30day hold on the funds.

    At the Lloyds TSB the fee was £8.50 for cheques between two sterling amounts (after conversion) all you had to do is fill a form out.

    You don't need a foreign currency account, its advisable if you get alot of foriegn currency.

  3. Your UK bank will be able to convert a check drawn on a US bank in US$ but they will probably charge a high fee for doing so,
