Can i charge my 12 volt battery with a standed 12 volt adapter (not a charger)

ive got a 12 volt battery (not car one, but scooter one) and i dont have the original charger. my tv runs on 12 volts and the adaper fits onto the battery. could i use that to charge it up, or do i need an attual battery charger. if i do, will a car battery charger work?

  1. Chargers are more complicated than that. Chances are you'll either burn up the adapter or fry the battery.


  2. Your TV charger would only trickle charge the battery and as most only work in millivolts the charge would take a long time. However it would work as this is the type of charger sold to keep car batteries charges on modern cars when they are laid up for a holiday because the computer draws current even when he engine is switched off.

  3. The adapter won't transmit a charge to the battery.

    Yes a car charger for 12 volt will work fine, just don't leave it charging too long.

  4. Provided that you have the correct polarity, and that the battery does not draw too much current from the adaptor, you can use almost any 12v DC power source to charge a normal lead/acid battery.  

    Beware not to charge a 'Gel' battery with anything other than its proper charger, as these use a special smart charger which charges in stages using a constant voltage/regulated output.
