  1. Your best plan is to contact HMRC call centre & get them to give you a proper tax code,  Or call into a local enquiry office (make an appointment) once you have started. That way should ensure no tax is paid. You will need to know your National Insurance Number, & your employer's  tax reference.

Note-there is no such thing as a local "tax office" anymore.

  2. You will get it back before long and it will be a nice bonus for you when you do...i have been emergency taxed a few times and have usually got it back within a couple of months

  3. Ask your employer for the tax reference of the office they deal with.  When you've finished working, phone them up.

  4. If you are only working at vacation time, ask employer to complete form P38S, which you can then sign to say it will be your only job. Tax will then not be deducted unless you earn over £5435 (which goes up to £6035 in September) If you are only working for two months, I doubt you will go over that limit. Only employers are supplied with forms P38S, as they have to comlete most of the details.

Any student working throughout the year, albeit part-time, gets treated like an ordinary employee.

If you have already started job, and you have suffered tax deduction, on completion of form P38S, employer can refund. You should not have to go through complicated processes with tax office.

NB, tax offices still do exist, although they are getting fewer at an alarming rate, it's just that the general public doesn't have access to them any more, either by personal visit or phone.

  5. Yes you certainly can, any emergency tax can be claimed back providing it has not exceeded your annual allowance, as you are a student and it is a part time job, your personal allowance is £5,435, and i will assume you are well within it. you must calculate you annual wage and see if it is within this personal allowance then talk to your employer ask which tax office they deal with and call them up.

  7. Just go to your nearest tax office and complain, and take with you any paperwork you have for the last few months. They are very efficient at taxing people massively when they are on low incomes, so let them sort it out.
