I am 15 (turning 16 soon), great shape, 6'0, and i was wondering if i could get back into swimming competitively, i started off really fast and forgot to stretch so my arms were cramped and my time and form was worsened... so for a 50 free it was a 37 sec, but that's not legit, so I'm wondering what are normal times for a Junior in High School. cause i have the motivation to achieve anything so just give me some numbers & tips. Thanks!

  1. normal for a junior in high school i'd say 25~, decent <23, good <21, but you got decent height, remember when there's a will, there's a way

  2. Well, for a 16 year old guy I'm guessing the average time for a 50 free is somewhere within 23-25 seconds (yards).  And if you want to start swimming competitively again, it's up to you.  Swimming is great exercise.

  3. you dont have to be 21 secs for a 50 thats crazy. my high school team was 3rd in the state and our best swimmers swim 25- 28

  4. Normal times for your age group can range anywhere from 21 seconds to 30 seconds in a 50 free.

  5. Joe,

Yes you can always 'compete again'. It's always good to begin a workout with stretching but a good warm up is just as important.

"Normal" is a relative word but I'll do my best to give you something to compare to for the 50 freestyle.

To make varsity on most US HS teams:

    Yard - Meter

    27 - 30

    Competitive District Finalist

    25 - 28

    Competitive State Finalist

    22 - 25

    Competitive National Finalist

    20+ - 23+

These are generalized but you can use it to gage where you'd like to fit in.

    Good luck.

    Enjoy!

  6. a junior in high school needs to be doing in the 21 second range for a 50 yard free.
