So I have a windows XP PC and it's connected to the internet wirelessly. Can i hook one end of the ethernet cable into my xbox and the other into the back of my PC and get internet on the Xbox?

Yes you can connect your xbox 360 to the internet through your PC providing that internet sharing is enabled on your PC. Just go into your local area connection through the control panel, then properties, and there should be a sharing tab with an option to 'share' the internet with other computers on the network.
