  1. minidv camcorders have to have a firewire (ieee 1394) connection.

If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….

Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your laptop probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, but make sure you have an empty bay, cause if you don't then that's a problem. Most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.

The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection.

edit. the problem with laptops is that don't always have  an empty bay.

  2. S-video on your laptop is OUTPUT only. So you can connect your laptop to a TV.

Buy a PCMCIA Firewire card for your laptop. Firewire is IEEE1394.

    Edit:

The card will give you a Firewire port. You then need a cable to connect camcorder to laptop; costs about £3.
