Can i connect speakers directly to my new hdtv?

A friend gave me four surround sound speakers but not the receiver for them. Is there any way I can hook them up to my new TV?

no, you need some sort of amplifier to power them.

No, you cannot. Your HDTV lacks the amplifier to power the speakers, or the processing to output enough channels for surround sound. Buy a surround sound receiver, while you're at it, get a 5th speaker for your center channel, and a subwoofer.

If your TV has an optical audio out you're halfway there, you can buy an "okay" receiver without speakers, and fill in your gaps, or just skip all the way to a z-5500, which I've never regretted.

It puts my old H&K to shame.
