Can i convert a hifi speaker into a sub woofer?

Theoretically it's possible as a passive sub, but by the time you add a crossover, the "out" jacks from the sub to the main speakers, and the hassle of modifying your speaker cabinet, it just doesn't seem to be cost effective, not to mention the hassle. I have a good quality 12" downfiring passive sub that only cost me about $125. You could just hook it up to your "B" speaker output but that wouldn't eliminate the need for a crossover network. If you can pull it off please let me know. I'd love to hear about the particulars.
