  1. No. If you need money from the US the best way is to have international postal money orders sent to you.


  2. Shinsei and Citibank do so for sure, but expect a 1000-5000 yen service charge (per check) depending on the exact details.

  3. You need to have a bank account. And unless you have a reason for doing so, it won't be allowed. The money would also have to be in yen , not dollars

  4. The policy varies from bank to bank, but basically they will only accept a check from another bank or University or company - no private checks. And you must have an account with them. I deposited a check from a University for several thousands of dollars and it took about 1 month for me to have access to the money. No joke. They held the check for one month despite it being a University check. The Japanese banking system is a joke. My bank was Mizuho. Mizuho is definitely NOT gaijin-friendly. You should try another bank.
