My daughter failed the 6th grade twice, due to illness,so we have decided to home school her this year.I have decided just to home school her as if she were in 7th grade, because she is suppose to be in 8th this year.We plan on packing 7th & 8th grade together this year,so she can go into 9th grade next school year,as shes suppose to.

She is very smart, and i believe she will have this all down by the middle of this school year.Would it be possible to also cram in 9th grade work also,so she could possible be a sophomore next year?I know she has to take a test at the end of this school year, and if she aced the 9th grade one,do you think the would move her up into 10th?

she will be attending high school either way.We live in Virginia. Please don't ask why, just answer my question:)

  1. I typed up an answer to your last question, but by the time I submitted it you deleted the question.  I always copy my answers before submitting, so I still have it though.

Here is the answer I gave you.

"It really depends what work she is ready for. If she is capable of doing Algebra 1 or 2, and reading material on a 9th grade level, then there is no reason she can't do 9th grade work.

You might want to still *call* her a 7th grader though, in case the work proves too tough and you have to drop back into 7th grade material. Also, it will look great if she is required to test, what I mean is, someone doing 9th grade work is going to score very high on a 7th grade test. So it will look better to have her test as a 7th grader, regardless of what level of work she is doing. Better to appear a "really smart" 7th grader than a "not so bright" 9th grader.

The other advantage to still calling her a 7th grader is that later on, when she would be in 10th or 11th grade, you might be able to have her take college courses for High School credit. Those credits count as High School and as college, and can be applied to a degree as well as to a homeschool diploma. The best part about that is that the state will pay for her first two years of college, but if you officially "graduate" her, she will no longer qualify.

So if she is ready, go ahead and give her 9th grade work, but on paper call her a 7th grader. She can still put the courses on her transcript for High School, that is known as taking High School credits in Junior High, sometimes referred to as "credits in escrow".

If you want more information on college credits for high school students, Google "Dual enrollment", "Dual Credits", and "Running Start"."

Now, when I typed it up before, I didn't know two things.  I didn't know she failed 6th grade, and I didn't know you planned to send her back to Public School.  If she is ready for that level of work, you can put her into the grade you want for homeschool.  However, I think you should be aware that no matter what the situation, it will be up to the discretion of the Public School what grade to put her into when she returns.  Usually they will test for grade placement, sometimes they might want to see what you've done at home.

  2. One of the perks of homeschooling your child is that you can do away with the concept of strict school grades. What we do is teach the subject as a whole and work through at our own pace. My son works at what would be his grade level in some subjects and works ahead a couple of grades in others. The best thing about Homeschooling is that your child doesn't miss lessons like they would if they were away from school sick. My best advice to you is to start at a level that your daughter is comfortable with in each subject and then go from there. You don't have to rush through or skip anything because you feel like your child is a little behind as home schoolers generally learn faster due to the one on one tutoring aspect anyway and she'll catch up faster than you think. Good luck:)

  3. Yes, I think it's possible but it would be a lot of work. Doing 2 years in one will be very busy.

    Best of Luck!
