Can i drive a car in a foreign country with american license?

im going to japan and i would like to rent a car over there. i speak japanese (barely lol) but i dont know exacly how it works. do i have to get a new license or temporary or something?

  1. You can get an international drivers license, which is simply a translation of your US license.  As a previous poster mentioned, you can take care of this at a local AAA office.

    Japan has an extensive public transportation network.  I would seriously look at the costs and benefits of renting a car vs. taking trains, etc.  Just about everything is expensive in Japan, and fuel is no exception.  Converting to US measurements their gas prices are over $7 a gallon.

Oooh, Japan, don't know about that I know in Europe i was able to.  If I were you, i would call like a hertz or avis and ask them b/c they might know... for Japan, I would think you would need an international license.  they are cheap... .just go to AAA and they will get you one. I think its something like $20. I got one once but wasnt needed.
