In many states, you have up to 30 days. Check online at your state's DMV web site. Make sure you keep the Bill of Sale in the car.

it really depends what state you live in. you have 10 days in Texas as far as I'm concerned.

Yes you can drive in the bill of sale for 24hrs. Then you MUST have plates

Check with the DMV.  If the state gives you 30 days to pay the taxes, they will give you a temp tag to get you by.  I highly doubt any state would allow an unregistered vehicle to be on the road for any extended period of time.  I could be wrong though.
