Duck diving can make or break your surfing. Learning how to properly make it to the outside area of the lineup is crucial in your surfing advancement. Even if you can already blast 360 airs, if you can't duck dive correctly, you're doomed.

When moving toward the oncoming wave, position the nose of your board straight at the wave. You'll have a better chance of slipping through the turbulence if your board is more streamlined.

Paddle fast toward the wave and maximize your speed of approach in order to generate forward momentum to offset the energy coming at you.

As the wave gets close, grab both rails right below your shoulders in about the same place you would to stand up and begin to sink the nose down.Using your foot or knee, push the tail of your board under also, but make sure to keep the nose slightly deeper.

Right before the wave is about to hit, take a deep breath, give one final push on your surfboard to get it as deep as you can, and duck your head underwater. If executed correctly, you should be sunk deeply enough that the exploding wave will wash over you and push you out the back to safety. If not, you 'll get picked up and thrown into nature's washing machine.

In tropical locations, you can open your eyes underwater to check things out. It helps to see how deep the reef is, where the turbulence is, and how far away from the surface you are.

The most important thing to remember when duck diving is to hold on tight. If your surfboard gets ripped out of your hands, it will be bouncing around in the turbulence right next to you and can cause some serious injuries if the nose or fins find their way back to you amid all the chaos.

When you pop out the back, check your position and go chase down that next set!

  2. I weight 155 lbs and duck dive no problem on a 6'. Just make sure to paddle really fast and right as the wave is crashing on you push down on the front of the board in order to duck under the white wash

  3. YES!!

  4. bit heavier than you but I can do it an a 7 ft 9 mini mal. can't see any reason why not. once you have enough weight to submerge the nose. after that its just practice and taking spills.

  5. I don't know, can you? If you know how to duck dive, there is no reason that you can't on the board you described. The size of board you ride depends on the "RIDE" not the paddle out.
