  1. You can not keep any trout. They are listed under the federal endangered species act and you will be violating both federal and state laws if you intentionally kill one. 4d rule under ESA allows for some unendended "take" while catch and release fishing

    (158) Salinas River and tributaries (Monterey and San Luis Obispo cos.). Also see Section 8.00(c).

    (A) The main stem Salinas River. Dec. 1 through Mar. 7, but only on Sat., Sun.,

    Wed., legal holidays and opening and closing

    days. Only barbless hooks may be used.

    You cna pullup the regulations for your area.  Also it will give you a good idea on where to fish becasue it will list all the lakes and streams in Monterey County area.
