Today i just bought a cute little syrian named ozzy and I want to get him a friend I have another cage with a waterbottle and food and everything. I had an idea that when i get the 2nd hamster i put it in ozzy's cage for a minutes and watch them closely if they start to fight then i put the 2nd hamster in the other cage. So occasoinally I put them both in the same cage sometimes just until they start fighting. Would this idea work?

  1. NO!!! believe it or not, they really don't like having friends. they are a LOT better off alone. if there is more than one they will fight for dominance of the cages. that idea's really not good. they will eventually kill each other. if you want another hamster, go ahead. just make sure the two don't share a cage or there cages are connected. if they aren't together, they are both happy. DO NOT MIX SEXES!!!!!! they will mate and make tons of little hamsters. it sounds fun but it really isn't the mother has a very high chance of eating the babies. if they live, you will have to find GOOD homes for them, remember, pet stores probably won't take them. you don't want them to fight OR mate so just stick with one per cage.

  2. Not with syrians.  They will fight to the death.  Although I'm sure someone has had a syrian who is okay with other hamsters, I wouldn't risk it with anyone of mine.  They don't want or need "friends."  They are wired to be alone and prefer it that way.  Don't worry about getting him a buddy.  Focus on making sure he has plenty of space in his cage, lots of toys and interaction with you and he'll be very happy.

  3. Syrian hamsters are solitary hamsters, so if Ozzy is a male, and you get another male, they will fight until one wins, or one of them dies, same with females, but if you get a male and a female, they will mate, so only put them together for a little bit, and put them in seperate cages when you seperate them. Good luck!

  4. Heck no!

  5. If you're SURE Ozzy is a boy, you may be out of luck. Two boy hamsters will very likely fight. They'll probably wait until after 'lights out' to do it, too, as hamsters are nocturnal. You can get him a 'girlfriend' but be prepared for LOTS of babies! Ozzy will be fine without a buddy as long as you handle him often, daily being ideal. You can be his friend! You are his human, after all!

  6. If you want a second one, get a second one, but do not put them in the same cage even for short periods of time.  (Especially as a cage is not neutral territory, and so they will be even more inclined to fight.)  Adding hamsters into their territory will be stressful, too.

Ozzy will be perfectly happy having you as a friend, and introducing him to another hamster is risking the injury/death of one or both... Even if you standing there to break up fights.

  7. No, they'll team up and bomb your house.

  8. Sure, of course that would be a great idea. Having a second pet with the same breed would be the best choice for Ozzy. I would advise you to get a female, because male plus male, or female plus female tend to fight unless they have their space.
