  1. FOR MY DAD IT DEPENDS ON THE KID. TODAY I GOT THE CHASE HIGH SCHOOL CHECKING ACCOUNT FOR THOSE 13-17. IT IS LINKED TO A PARENTS ACCOUNT. MY PACKAGE COMES WITH A VISA CHECK CARD. THERE ARE NO SERVICE FEES. ALL THE RULES APPLY WITH THIS ACCOUNT EXCEPT IF YOU OVERDRAFT IT IS TAKEN FROM YOUR PARENTS. SO BE CAREFUL. IT CONVERTS TO A FREE CHECKING ACCOUNT WHEN YOU TURN 19.

  2. As a teacher and someone who has worked with students your age, in business and with money for years, the advice I am about to give you comes from years of experience.  This is not a lecture, although it may appear to come across in this manner. Also, I'm not going to tell you want you want to hear, but what might happen to your personal finances in years to come if you decide to start using plastic.

When you ask, "charge card" do you mean a credit card, or debit card; and why do you want to put your money on a piece of plastic? Just to take out of ATM's, or for a deeper reason? To look cool, try to impress your friends, because you don't want to be bothered with having to go to the bank?

If you do not want to be bothered with going to the bank, go anyway. Physically touch the money and make a mental note that you are spending it. This will cut down on impulse spending.

If you are afraid you will lose your money, go to the bank, take it out and put yourself in a mindsight of being responsible with not losing it.

If you want to put your money on a card because you want to make an impression on your friends it will be a short lived impression that will fade from their mind in about two minutes.

If you are asking how to get a debit card, understand you are psychologically setting yourself up for using credit cards in a few years.  You see, when you physically carry money around with you, it teaches you responsibility in making sure you don't lose it. It also reinforces the fact that when you physically spend money, your brain registers the fact that you are spending your (or your parents) hard earned money. You actually feel the paper in your hands. On the other hand, when you use plastic, your brain does not register that you are spending money. Your brain has not point of reference to understand the transaction.

Lastly, do not get caught up in a mindset of mass consumerism in order to temporarily make yourself feel better. Instead, invest $166 a month at 10% for seven years, and when you are 65, you will have around $1.5 million when you retire. This is not theory, but a proven fact.

  3. You cant' get a credit/charge card, but you should be able to get an ATM card, as long as you have a bank account.  You won't be able to use it to buy on credit, but you can access the money you do have.

  4. wal-mart offers rechargeable cards.  the per incident cost to re-fill them though seems pretty high.

  5. You should buy a pre-paid card. Then you will have a card, but it is your money. Then you won't be able to spend more than you have on the card. You won't spend more than you have, and you won't get into trouble with bad credit and paying intrest.  You can buy these at most drugstores. and you can pay to put more money on it when you want to.

  6. nope not a regular line of credit but you can get 2 types of cards

    1. a pre-paid card like vanilla mastercard...just put the amount of money you want on it and use it

    2. a debit card (your parents have to either open an account for you and authorize you to have a card or authorize you to have a card attached to their account)

Once you're 18 you can apply for your own credit card.
