My family owns a small nine hole golf course and in a few years i am hoping to buy a horse. I don't want to board it some where and i was thinking about bulding a small barn in my back yard. i was wondering it would be possible to get permit to keep the horse thier or would it be close to inposible? the golf course is our back yard so i would have alot of space to excersise the horse.

Thanks!

  1. I too wondered this for a while but was then faced with the facts.

Horses need lots of open, spacious, green fields to graze in, and to be exercised in.  If your yard is park of the golf course, yes you have room to ride him, but when you don't have time to, will he be trapped in a small little stall?  If so, it isn't fair.  However, if you do allow your horse a portion of the golf course, such as at least 30 feet long, it is possible for the horse to be happy.  But it is really up to your town.  Go online to your town's website and look at what they have to say about space.  If it is allowed and you are able to get a permit, continue to think about if the horse would be happy standing in a small square of grass until you get back from school/work each day, and then a short ride.  There are pros and cons to this kind of situation, but I wish you the best of luck!

  2. depends on the zoning laws in your area... you would have to phone to find out.

here is an interesting idea -

this is what we have... 2 of them so far - we want more.

  3. Oh I am sure the golfers will be thrilled to find the new "traps" a horse would leave on the greens!

There is specific zoning for horses, you need to check for it.   Your fenced back yard will have to be at least 1 acre, the golf course will not count.
