  1. yes you can. mercury vapor bulbs emit heat, viable light,UV-a & UV-b

  2. Yes, only Mercury vapor lamps produce both heat and UVB lighting.  They are pretty expensive, and you need to replace them when the UVB wears out...you'll need a UVB meter for measuring this.  Otherwise it is still recommended to replace these bulbs every 6 months.

  3. Absolutely!  I use these with all my dinurals with amazing results!  I use and recommend MegaRays from Bob Mac; outstanding service and quality of the products!  Check out his web-sire for more info (it's got ALOT of good info anyway) www.reptileuv.com  The T-Rex Active UV Heat is my second choice and is available in most pet stores or at reptile expos. ~Michelle

  4. All UVB bulbs also put out UVA, but not the other way around.

I DO NOT recommend using your UV lamp as a main heat source- it is too hard to heat large amounts of water that way. It IS nice, however, to use it to heat the basking area.

Just FYI- not all of the experts believe that water turtles need UVB since they get a lot of the vitamin D in a good diet.
