If you live in a cabled area, then Virgin Media have their own lines (under the street) they can offer phone, Digital TV, Broadband, and have deals on virgin mobile.   Being fibre-optic lines there is always a crystal clear picture, and good broadband speeds.  Their phone is the same as BT   £11 per month

It will depend on where you live, BT control most of the countries land lines, however there are other cable companies, based mainly in the cities. Most of the phone companies that advertise themselves have their services carried over BT lines, so you will have to go through BT to get a new number.

You DO NOT have to have a 'phone line with BT even if there are no cable companies in your area.

Even though your new Service Provider uses BT telephone poles and wires YOU will be a customer of Talk Talk, Sky etc etc etc.
