  1. A DNA test can be done from the amnio fluid.  There are things they can tell from it, but not everything.  If it's a boy, they MIGHT find XY cells, but not necessarily.  If it's a girl, they may find only XX, but there may be other cells with XY (perhaps from s***n) which might throw them off.  Likewise, hormones may be found in various concentrations, but since both men and women have all the same hormones (but in different quantities) the presence of those hormones are not conclusive of the s*x of the baby from amnio fluid.  (They tend to test s*x via ultrasound, later in the pregnacy, and even ultrasound is not 100% conclusive for s*x determination).

Testing for various abnormalities is done, and several abnormalities can be found with a high degree of certainty.  Some are not so certain.  Also, despite what you ascert, the DNA taken from amnio fluid is not purely that of the baby.  The woman's DNA is in there, too, so if a woman with a gene which they think means a possibility of an abnormality has an amnio, that gene may show up but not have been transfered as dominant or causative to the baby, just present in the amnionic fluid.

Are you hoping the DNA from the amnio will show a problem?   I think, no accusation or condemnation, that you are hoping a condition will be detected in the baby so you can make an excuse to abort.  Maybe you think you can't handle a "baby with problems," because "i'm young," but it's not age that enables parents to do that, it's love, care and nurture which brings up any baby.

I think you're looking for a way out.  Consider why you've gotten into this situation, and where it could take you.  Having a baby will change your life forever, but that is a result of your own actions.

Either abort and rethink what you do with your body (considering future pregnancies and STDs), or have the baby and think about being a Mom.  BTW, where's the male?

  2. They do ultrasounds to determine if it's a boy or a girl. I'm not sure about the DNA tests, but I think that they can do that from the amnio. Did the doctor tell you that you needed an amnio for a particular reason? I wouldn't just have one done just for the heck of it, b/c they can increase your chance of m/c and increase the chance of your water breaking.

    *EDIT*

I know that they can tell you if it is a boy or girl via the amnio, but I'm just saying that's not the best way to find out if it is a boy or girl, when you can do it via ultrasound.

I also have to agree with the other commenter, I can't believe anyone would be that cold to get rid of the baby just because it might have a few health problems. If it wouldn't survive anyway I could understand, but just because it wasn't going to be a perfectly healthy baby, is kind a selfish reason to kill another living being.

    *EDIT*

They won't just give you an amnio because YOU want one. They will first do an AFP and then go for a 2nd level ultrasound to determine if there is a problem, and then if there is they will go on and do an amnio then. Since you are young you are probaby to ignorant to know that. And just because the baby is going to have downs is NO REASON to KILL IT! My son was born at 24 weeks and I was willing to do whatever I had to to take care of him, no matter what his disabilites may have been due to him being born early. However he passe away after 26 days due to doctors error. I would give anything to have him back so don't go judging!

  3. amnio looks at the chromosomes and detects abnormalities. it can tell you gender. it cannot tell you paternity. also be aware that the test carries a 1% chance of miscarriage. so out of every 100 people who have it done, 1 of them will lose their baby.

  4. Yes you can do a DNA test through Amnio, it's just as accurate as a DNA test that is done after birth.

If you are young, unless you have done things to make you believe you'll have a baby with problems, most likely you will not.

Being young is no excuse at any point. If you were ready to have unprotected s*x, you should be ready to take the concequences, as well as the good. Beisdes that, you've obviously had more than one partner for you to want a DNA test, meaning, you knew what you were getting yourself into.

A lot of women in here at pro-choice, and are still appauled at your decisions, especially when it was YOUR doings that created a pregnancy, not the baby's!

  5. Just so you know, they will NOT give you an amnio, unless they think there's a darn good reason for it... You wanting to know if the baby has problems, is not a good enough reason, and you can't demand one, either... Since you're so young, I suggest you use birth control, next time, or abstain.

  6. Yes they can. I think you have to let them know ahead of time because they might have to draw some extra fluid. But yes they can. I'm not sure if your insurance will cover the dna part though either that's something you'll have to find out. Good luck
