Hi i was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice. My father in law died the other day and he lives in Canada. My wife and i, along with my son have got to go to his funeral, only problem is, we dont have any funds. We dont have overdraft, credit card, bank loan. None of us are able to obtain credit and i already have £2000 borrowed from the credit union which im currently in a small amount of arrears. His funeral is next wed so there are flights available at a total cost of £1249 for 2 adults and 1 child. Provident are out of the question too, cant ask them either. Is there any type of government grant or fund or charity whereby i can get the money. I have no problems with paying the money back its just i dont have that kind of money in such a short notice of time. Time is running out quickly and i need someone to help me.

  1. you need to borrow money- contact your family or your wife's family. no-one is going to give you a free flight-good luck

  2. Could just your wife go to her Dad's funeral and you stay at home with your son.  This would really cut down the costs if she can cope going on her own.  My family had a similar problem flying from England and Australia to South Africa recently, so I can understand your predicament.  Sending just one person to represent the family was the only choice open.

  3. Use a credit card. If there was funding it would be abused.

  4. Speak to an airline representative and see if you qualify for what is otherwise known as a "bereavement fare".

  5. Chris you are in a terrible predicament .I am so sorry to hear your story I cannot offer advice but my condolences to you and your family.

  6. I don't know any more the way air lines are but they use to give you half off for a death in the family.  but the way they are now I don't know. as  far as getting help with cost you may try a church or something like that they may help. sorry for your loss I hope this helps.

  7. Yes, it is called the bereavement fare, or compassionate fare, which is offered to family members traveling for a death in the family, or imminent death.

    * They are not always the lowest fare however, but are last minute fares that can be booked right up until departure time.

    * They are offered for family members traveling to a funeral.

    *  Discounts range from 10 to 75 percent off of full fare prices. The discount most often offered is 50 percent off of full fare.

    *  Discounts usually apply for one airline only. In effect, if you need more than one airline to get to where you need to go, you will need to buy separate tickets and ask about each airline's policy.

    * Bereavement fares may not be available to all destinations offered by an airline. There are less bereavement fares offered for traveling internationally.

If your wife felt comfortable enough go alone, it would probably be more financially feasible.  Good luck.

  8. I cant see any way out of this for you, I'm sorry but unless you have something to sell you will have to send your sympathy and visit when you can.

  9. Mamadamus says sorry about your loss. Mamadamus also says, if you can't afford tickets for everyone, get one for the wife. Mamadamus says if you don't have the money, sell something of value. Mamadamus says bereavement rates are still quite high but they allow you some flexibility. Mamadamus says check travelzoo.com or orbitz.com for the cheapest available fares.

Mamadamus prays for your family at this sad time.

  10. you might try dhss or credit union
