There's some email scam going around that claims it's possible. I find this hard to believe.

  1. Yes, you can.

Just go to the courts and if you have a reasonable excuse for not being a juror, the judge will dismiss you. This is done before the lawyers begin to ask any questions.

I was there maybe 30 mins top.

  2. just got summons for jury duty, bottom line states contempt of court if i do not appear

  3. They would send you a letter in the mail. not email. I'd call the supposed court and make sure it's not a scam.

  4. It's easy enough to get out of.   "Hang him by the balls!"   should get you excused from any jury if the defence is at all capable.

  5. Not showing up is contempt of court.

Making statements like "hang them all" just to get out of serving can also be viewed as contempt of court if the judge is in such a mood.

  6. ya.

  7. Besides being a civic duty, it is a legal requirement.

I understand that is made clear on the notification, when you are called for jury service.

  8. I don't know what exactly happens, but some form of charges do get pressed if you don't show up without a reasonable excuse.

  9. Yup! Faliure to attend jury duty is contempt of court stated in the Criminal Justice Act and the Jury Act for the UK the Crimilal Code for Canada annddd i dno bout america but either way u will get rested unless you have a good reason! Contempt of court is punished by fine of up to $1000.00 and/or five days in the county jail.

  10. yes.  And whether or not it is likely depends entirely on where you live.  If you live in a big city with a higher population, I doubt the reaction of the court will be the same as living in a rural area as I do with a much smaller population.  There is not nearly as much wiggle room when a jury pool is gathered.

  11. The short answer is: Yes you could be arrested for failing to report for jury duty.  However, it is unlikely to go that far.

All dealings with the jury system are done by U.S. mail, and not by email.  There are a couple of scams working through email and by telephone that attempt to extract personal information based on scare tactics about failure to report for jury duty.

If you are contacted by email or telephone concerning jury duty, you should not give any information, and should contact the proper authorities by using the telephone book to locate the correct number to call. Don't call a number given to you by an email or other telephone call.

  12. OH yeah... serious

  13. In California, yes you can.

But you can also get an exemption.  How?  Employer

states it would be a hardship

for him if you are gone.  (This

may need a couple of signatures.)  Also if you get

    a medical exemption from a

doctor--Your thinking is impaired due to medication/

you cannot sit in one spot for

more than 1/2 hour/ you have

    to visit the bathroom frequently.

I will tell you that a lot of this

    is unnecessary as they give

you a phone number to call

and see if the trial is still on.

Many times it is settled out of

court and you are not even

    needed.

  14. Yep.  Failure to answer a jury summons will result in a bench warrant being issued for your arrest.  You'll likely be found in contempt of court, jailed for a period of time, and fined heavily.  Courts have very little patience for people who refuse to obey their orders, and a jury summons is just that: an order to appear.
