  1. Bifocals and progressive lenses are your options, but they tend to be very hard on the visual system, and usually take a lot to get used to. People are very adaptable and hardy though. Two pairs of glasses are much easier on the visual system, but can quite cumbersome. My students put them on strings around their necks while they are Relearning to See

  2. Yes.

They don't have to be the classic "half-eye" or "half-moon" glasses with air at the top, which are wonderfully efficient, but dont suit everyone for style.

They come in bifocal and varifocal (no visible line ) form.

I believe they do exist as ready-made glasses, (I've also seen some non-Rx sunglasses with a lower reading portion, for reading outdoors) but I really wouldn't recommend those as the fitting of the height of the reading portion is quite critical, as well as the distance setting between the eyes.

  3. yes

  4. Sure you can .

A bifocal or progressive lens with no power at the top is quite common.

Personally , I prefer a half eye reading glasses that I can look over the top of for distance. It gives a much bigger reading area than any type of bifocal can.

Lots of people don't like the half eye glasses though just because of the impression that it looks " old"...but I don't care, I'm not trying to fool anybody, just see the best.
