Question:

Can i get mummified?

i reckon it would be mad to get mummified when i die. can you still do it, or do i just have to hope to die in the desert or a peat bog or something?

  3. The best natural way to preserve a body is to be buried in a peat bog.

    But there is a religious sect in Japan, that their most holiest of priests go through a process to prepare themselves for natural mummification after death.  It takes many years, first is to shed all fat tissues in their bodies through daily rigorous exercises, then a slow starvation to shrink the internal organs.  Then finally, to eat a woody diet, which allows the body to extract and absorb the natural preservatives found in trees.

    Lastly, they are buried alive with a string which is attached to a bell above ground.  Each day, a caretaker would come by and see if the bell still rings.  Once the ringing has stopped.  The caretaker sealed the tomb and let the body to mummify.

    The body is removed after a set time (usually years after death) and those bodies that achieved mummification are consider as "relics" and are displayed in their temples.  The bodies that did not achieve mummification are re-buried.
