u have your passport in your possession and u take out photocopies of all the pages before u submit it to us embassy just for your records.

in any case u will get your passport back from us embassy where u are granted a visa or not. so, there is nothing to worry about, but do keep copies of your passport with u.

Are you asking as to whether the American Consulate will return your passport after your interview for issue of a visa for visiting the USA is conducted? That is what I could understand of your question.

If my understanding of your question is correct, then irrespective of the fact as to whether your application for visa is accepted or rejected by the American Consulate, your passport will be returned to you.

Your passport is your personal official travel and identification document and only the country issuing it (in your case India) can seize it for any unlawful act committed by you. The American Consulate can not do so. It can only take custody of your passport till it issues a visa in your name. Your passport in that case will be returned to you after they have fulfilled their requirements regarding the issue of your visa.
