  1. If you have cable you won't notice anything except a better picture maybe

-This is assuming the providers don't mess things up

Bottom line ..you're good to go with cable

  2. Yes you can.  Most full power stations have had digital signals in the air since about 2002 and many transmit HD during afternoon and prime time hours.  HD programming availability is increasing all the time.

All you need is a good quality, properly installed, UHF/VHF TV antenna.  Stay away from "powered" or "amplified" antennas; in some cases they can actually limit the stations you can get.  Also, there is no such thing as a "HD" or "digital" antenna, that's just marketing hype.  The same TV antennas we've been using for 50 years will work fine.

Visit http://www.antennaweb.org and put in your ZIP code.  You will get a list of stations in your area that you could expect to receive Over The Air, suggestions on antennas for your unique situation and where to aim them.  Remember, for Over The Air reception of digital signals, you will also need to have a Digital TV or a converter box for your old style analog TV.

I hope this helps.  Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.

  3. You can absolutely pick up HD channels by over-the-air signals IF you have the correct antenna. You need an antenna thats called an "Amplified Indoor Antenna." Most packaging should say something about receiving HD programming. Make SURE you are buying an "amplified" antenna... regular ones will not work.

These antennas will cost anywhere from $25 to $50 the main differences being the amplification of the signal in decibels. Obviously, the higher amplification, the better picture quality you will receive.

You can buy them at electronics retailers such as Best Buy, Circuit City, or Radioshack. I recommend going to Best Buy, because unlike other retailers, the employees actually have to go through a certification process in order to wear the "blue shirt," so they're more technologically aware and apt to know your needs and how to fulfill them.
