  1. Your Military police background should make it easier to get to detective on the basis of previous experience, but you will not be able to make a direct swap from one to the other without the intermediate step of being a general duties officer.


  2. No.  Veteran points only count toward being hired as an officer.  Investigators are promoted from within.

  3. No--your gonna have to put in time on the street no matter what department you go to work for.

    You've got to go through the academy for your state, then put in serious patrol (street) time. Civilian law enforcement is MUCH different than MP work. In addition, civilian LE agencies all vary in how they handle things.

    An agency can move you to an investigations position only after you've demonstrated you've got the basic (street patrol) experience well in hand.
