'm 19 and i'm on my parents insurance. I want to start going to the psychiatrist but i know they disprove of me being on medication. I REALLY think i need to go talk to a professional about that decision, so can i go without their permission if i pay the co-pay? Will it cost them any money?

  1. You need to call the insurance company to check what their procedure is.  You don't want to self refer yourself as it could cost more.

  2. ~~You should have your own insurance card.  Call and get your benefit information on mental health, then find out the process they require for you to be seen by one. This way you get exact information on costs and how to get started. Some insurance co.'s require you to get a referral from your primary care doctor, some have a a special number you call for mental health and you answer some questions and they place you with the best type of doctor for your condition. You  have to do it right, or you could end up with a large bill. Also if you can just self refer, then make sure you choose a doctor within their network. After taking care of that, you are able to see a doctor for whatever you need. You are an adult an all information is completely confidential. Just because you are seeing a psychiatrist does not mean they will medicate you. You will be evaluated for the best treatment. If you can get a few recommendations on good psychiatrist in your area, or ask your insurance company for references. Above all, if you aren't happy with who you see, then get  an appointment with another. Your smart, getting help with mood problems is just as important as getting help for physical ailments. Best of luck!!~~
