  1. bettas need 5 gallons heated and filtered

    no light is fine

but allot of natural light will cause lots of algae

you cant buy a betta and a tank the same day as an aquarium will take atleast a month to cycle

read up on cycling the aquarium with fish food

  2. If You have blinds just shut the blind at the window were your fish is

Your arrangement is fine mine is like exactly the same.

  3. Sure Maddie, you can have a betta without all the trimmings.

They are partial air breathers, and can tolerate some fairly difficult water conditions.  They don't need a lot of light or even a filter.

However, you need to change their water once a week to get rid of waste products.  Don't overfeed him.  Remember, a fishes stomach is about as big as its eye.  Feeding a couple times a day is fine, but watch how much you give him.  About 1/4 teaspoon total per day of flake food should work.  If he doesn't eat all that, reduce the amount a little at a time till you find his comfort zone.

It's a simple matter to put the betta in a glass of its tank water while you empty the tank, wipe down the glass, and refill it with distilled water.  You can get distilled, or bottled water by the gallon, at the grocery quite cheap.  The important thing is there is no chlorine in the water.

My betta tank was one gallon, and I used no light and no filter.  I bred the male and produced viable offspring using the above care methods.

They are one of the hardiest freshwater fishes around, but his water temperature needs to be around 78 degrees.  A heater is cheap, and a very small one would do the job.

Enjoy your fish.  Remember, you can't put two males together or they will immediately fight to the death.

PS:  I am glad the sun does not shine through your bedroom window at night.

  4. the quick answer is no.....but sounds to me like this poor fish will end up in the toilet sometime soon

  5. go to these websites, learn all you can:

    http://www.bettatalk.com

    http://www.bettysplendens.com

the light does not matter, as long as they can tell between day and night. The light of the room should be enough.

I understand why my fellow aquarists would suggest you get a 5gal heated and filtered tank, that is one of the set ups that require less maintenance from your part, but it is my opinion that it is  not essential. I have kept up to 10 bettas at a time, all in 2 and d1gal bowls and containers and have kept them healthy and building bubble nests . However bettas are tropical fish so getting atleast a 2gal tank or bowl would be the best because that way you would be able to have a mini 7.5 watt heater (you cant have a heater in anything smaller). Mini heaters are not expensive, you can get the junior heater at wal mart for only 5$ or the hydor at petco for 14$. Otherwise, you have to manage to keep the temperature between 70 and 80 degrees somehow (not with a light or through adding hot water!!!, through room temperature) but preferably between 75 and 80

Reccomendations if you are plannig on having a smaller, basic setup:

    1. add live plants, they help with water quality

    2. use aged water. I have a 10gal storage box filled with conditioned water and two air stones to keep the water circulated.

    3. Change the water often. If it is 1gal, try to change it every 5 days, if it is 2gal, you can change it every week.

FOOD: if you want to make your bettas happy, get them live or freeze dried brine shrimp or blood worms. For pellets, feed them 3-5 a day and try to fast them for one day of the week.

its been a loooooong time since i answered in the fish section! i might come back!

ps. every "tank" that i have seen for bettas that do not have lighting are usually not suitable for bettas. Beware of betta novelty displays such as the "betta hex tank"

as for 0's answer DO NOT use distilled water!!

  6. worried about taking care of your pets and pet care issues...

    refer to this website

it has got tips and information on every aspect of pet care

  7. im sorry to say this but that set-up isnt good... bettas are tropical and really do need 5g with heater and filter to thrive=[ plz skip the fish till you have an apropriate tank!
