i have had type 1 diabetes since i was 8 months old.

and been using an insulin pump for 6 years.

ever since i can remember, my sugar is always high.

i will go to sleep, and when i test first thing in the morning,

my sugar is about 300 or higher.

this morning it was 456,

and i was dizzy, with a headache, and my mouth was really dry

and everything, i drink like 20 or so bottles of water everyday

i have been to the doctor several times for this,

and he doesnt see the big deal in it. and neither do my parents.

but having a headache and drinking so much water is s******g my life up. my teachers let me carry a bottle of water in class because they get so tired of me having to ask to go to the water fountian.

what should i do?

  1. i assume you have kidney function tests and if you dont i suggest you get one post haste. high sugars and too much fluid are deadly in diabetes.

  2. You need a new doctor!  Preferrably an ENDOCRINOLOGIST who specializes in diabetes.

NO doctor should be letting his aptient get by with sugar readings in the 300 range!  YOU ARE KILLING YOURSELF, and he is letting you do it.

. . .and you have an insulin pump!?!?!?!?

It sound as though may you have not been properly trained in the use of the pump, and you are incapable of properly controlling your system.  It is also possible that the pump has failed.

This is YOUR body and YOUR disease.  I don't usually tell kids to tell their parents what to do, but in this case I'll make an exception

TELL YOUR PARENTS THAT YOU WANT A NEW DOCTOR NOW.

I would also suggest that you visit the school nurse AND your guidance counselor, both of whom may be able to ally with you in causing you parents to obtain better medical help.

In the mean time, watch you diet. you must have NO sweet food -- colas, sports drinks, energy drinks, cakes, candies, doughnuts, etc.  Alo reduce your intake of starches such as breads, crackers, rice, pasta, and potatos -- especially french fries.

Exact more fibers like brocolli, green salads, and Cheerios.

    FIND THAT NEW DOCTOR

  3. I suggest demanding to switch doctors. Your insulin intake may need to change since your body does change over time. It has to ocassionally be tweaked. My sister in law has an insulin pump too and she has to adjust it overtime. No matter what you will have times that there is not a whole lot you can do about your sugars being out of control. There are so many outside factors that affect your glucose levels. You do need a good Diabetic doctor though that can keep tabs.

Would your parents like to be responsible for your kidneys shutting down because they won't get you the proper care to keep your glucose levels in check somewhat?

You need to demand it and if they won't do anything then you need to tell your school nurse. What your parents are doing by not getting you the proper care is neglect. They can get in a lot of trouble for this from CPS if reported.

  4. Those sugar levels are way out of control, the insulin pump should be able to control them, you probably need to adjust your basal rate, and carb-insulin ratio. Talk to your doctor about this, remember that only a specialist(endocrinologist) is able to deal with this type of problems. I have used an insulin pump for over 5 years, it broke a few days ago but I am trying to find another one because its the best way that I have maintain control.
