New York is a relatively complex state. There are all sorts of ethnicities, social classes and economic statuses in the various cities, towns and villages. State resources used to be very industrial, but now our bigger cities upstate are in a state of decay. (There's a big service sector, but much less manufacturing industry.) Likewise, upstate NY used to do a great deal of farming, but this too has fallen mostly by the wayside as huge industrial farms were opened out in the western US, and people relied less and less on local farmers. To some extent, local farming is making a come-back, but still not the way it once was.

With the general exception of the Hudson Valley, a lot of small towns in NY comprise of middle-class to lower-income families. However, it has become a huge trend for people from the NYC area to buy second homes in small upstate NY towns. This has been driving the taxes up in small towns, which further complicates finances and life for already low-income families, causing some hard feelings.

There also happened what "upstaters" called "Giuliani's Evil Plan" - during Giuliani's tenure, he initiated a plan that either "forced" or made it extremely difficult for low-income families to afford to live in the NYC area. There was a huge "migration" of low-income families to upstate NY where housing is more affordable. Now you don't see the gangs and crime and homeless in the NYC area as much as you used to because they relocated to cities such as Binghamton, Syracuse, Rochester, Albany and Buffalo (Buffalo is western NY's biggest city), and other surrounding cities. "Upstaters" are very angry about this as violent crime, gangs and drug related crimes have surged in upstate cities which were once considered very safe. A big factor of the slummy areas of upstate NY's cities is that landlords from the NYC area will buy up cheap apartment housing with the sole reason to collect rent, and they won't fix or repair their buildings. Binghamton is starting to fight back against these "absentee landlords" by passing "The Lockdown Law" - a legal process that allows the city to close down troubled properties, evict criminal tenants, hold absentee landlords responsible for allowing their properties to transform into havens for illegal activity and appoint a local property manager.

Aside from NY's economic problems, the state is one of the most beautiful in the US. NY has a huge number of parks, hiking trails and waterways. The Catskills, Adirondacks and Finger Lakes are extremely popular with vacationers, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking trails and waterfalls to ice fishing and ski slopes to boating, fishing and hunting, NY's got it. There is also a big come-back for a lot of wildlife including vultures, bald eagles, deer, beaver, and black bear.

  2. You can probably find all the areas of NYC on a Subway map. You can pick one up from any subway booth.

  3. h**l's Kitchen is not the rough and gruff place that it once was.   The street gangs are gone and it is a popular place for actors and musicians to live.  It is just west of Times Square.  Some people refer to the area as Clinton.

Now the area is known for its food.  there are restaurants of all types along ninth ave as well as food stores.  Interest peaks in early May every year when they have the Food Festival that falls on the first or second weekend and has become new york's biggest street fair
