Can i hook up surround sound directly to the back of my tv?

or do i need to hook it up to my dvd player? how do i hook it up were i can have surround sound on both cable and dvds?

  2. you would need a stereo receiver capable of decoding Dolby digital (any 5.1 receiver will work)  as far as getting "true" Dolby (unchanged by the stereo processor) from your cable box you would need a box with either a coaxial audio output or optical audio output that would plug into the receiver.  otherwise you can use simulated 5.1 sound (not Dolby) off the base band (red and white) ports on the back of the box.  while shopping for a Dolby receiver check to see how many digital (coaxial and optical) inputs it has vs. what kind of outputs your cable box and DVD player have (i have a DVD player and a cable box both with coaxial digital out and only one coaxial digital audio input on my receiver)
