Well me and my friend have a club about animals and we want like a mascot. So i wanted to know if we could keep a gerbil in my basement. Its a....well...normal basement. We have a little room for our club, and its painted.

Oh, and if i cant keep a gerbil, what kind of animal can i keep? (besides guinea pig, dog, or a cat)

Thanks!

  1. If your basement where you will keep the gerbil is not too hot and not too cold for the gerbil, it will be okay.  I keep my pets in my basement during the summer because the basement is the coolest place in the summer and I don't want them to over heat up in my room, which is one of the hottest places in the house.

Hamsters are great pets to keep if you can't keep a gerbil.  You can play with hamsters, they are very sweet, and they are not as fast as gerbils, which makes them easier to catch if they get loose when you are playing with them.  Hamsters are also nocturnal.  Degus are also very good pets.  But degus are very social animals and should be kept with another degu.  They are very playful and curious and they are not nocturnal.  Mice are cute, little, small pets.  They are very entertaining pets.  Mice are a little bit skittish and a little harder to handle than most rodents.  Mice are social animals and should be kept with another mouse, which a pair of females is the easiest.  Try to avoid a pair of males, unless they are littermates and were never separated.  Rats are clean, intelligent, and affectionate animals.  They bond with their owners the same way that dogs do.  They become very attached to their owners.  They make playful, sensitive pets.  They can be taught to come by their name and they can learn a variety of tricks.  But rats do need at least an hour out of their cage a day to play.  I hope this helps.

  2. gerbils come from the desert, so they need a fairly warm climate. if your basement is renovated/ finished and has heaters and stuff, i dont see why not but if it is unfinished no. try a bird or fish.

  3. yes u can if your basement is room temperature and the gerbil feels comfortable.

if u cant keep a gerbil, u can keep a hamster, mouse, rat, a lizard, or something that u really like and enjoy playing with. hope this helps
