  1. As long as there's heating and AC down there to keep the room at a good temperature and there are no fumes, it's fine. However, please keep in mind that gerbils are social animals and should be kept in same s*x pairs. If you want a gerbil, please either get two males or two females.

Also, please do research BEFORE getting gerbils. Make sure you can properly care for them and they're the pet for you. They'll be more than just mascots. You're responsible for caring for them, and if they're not the right pets for you, you shouldn't get them.

If you have any questions about the care they need or anything else, feel free to e-mail me. I'd be glad to help answer them and help you decide whether or not you should get them.

  2. There's no reason not to have a gerbil.Just make sure you feed it regularily and give it fresh water. Don't forget that it needs it's cage cleaned every 2-3 days. The more you handle it the tamer it will become. Watch the temperature of the basement as they can go into hibernation if it's too chilly.

  3. It depends.

Is there a light on during the day or windows to let the sun in? It's not a good idea to keep gerbils in the dark all day.

Is the temperature regulated? If it's "room temperature," that's fine, but you don't want them somewhere that gets too cold or too hot.

Is it dusty? You want to keep the gerbils somewhere with clean air. Air filters can help, but ideally you want good clean air - the kind that you wouldn't mind breathing all day.

Can someone go down there every day to care for the gerbils? Pets are easier to neglect or forget about when they're out of sight.

If the basement has adequate lighting and climate control, isn't dusty or moldy or stuffy, and the gerbils will be cared for every day, it could work fine. However, if it isn't an acceptable environment - each basement varies - you could always keep the gerbils upstairs and just bring them down for club meetings or something ;-)

  4. I have a hamster in my unfinished basement and he is just fine.  Gerbils are a lot of fun.  I used to have five (we started with two "males" and they had babies).  They are awesome.  Good luck.

  5. Trust me on this when I say don't do it , cause chances are there will be mold & gerbils orginally come from very hot places, & were a basement is underground , they'll probably freeze & mold can damage their respitory tract indeffently, So if your going to keep a gerbil , keep it in a warm room free of dusty air. & if that's the only place you have for the gerbil I suggest getting a dog/cat, fish or some type of lizard.
