  1. no, the male will kill the female, please do not put them together!  Your friend is right.

  2. You should not keep a male and female together as a permanent arrangement.  Of course, they should be introduced for reproductive purposes.  However, you need a fair amount of expertise to breed bettas (it isn't a simple process).

Each of your betta fish need a separate tank.  The recommended set-up is a 2.5 gallon tank (minimum) with a heater.  Bettas are tropical and do best in 78F - 82F water temps.

  3. No!

  4. ok trust me, DO NOT PUT THE TWO FISH TOGETHER!!!!!!!!! i made that mistake many times before, even for just breeding. there have been studies done that say that there is a 75% chance of them killing eachother. seperate one of them asap!!! even with a hiding place, the female will be harassed into mating with the male. she will either die OR will kill the male. plz plz plz plz DO NOT put them together. bettas are animals that do not like to live with other bettas. (only for breeding purposes which is so much more compicated than it seems). your friend is rite.

  5. No...Not unless they are spawning. You can keep some females together or a male and some other community fish such as platys, mollies or other non fin  nipping fish.

  6. No, but you can put two female betta fish together!

  7. Please seperate your male and female betta.  Bettas are very territorial.  In the wild male bettas set up a territory which they defend against all other bettas, including females of the species.  Only when a female comes along that is full of eggs and ready to mate does the male allow her into his territory.  Then they will court, he will build the bubblenest, she will lay her eggs and she will go on her way while he tends the babies.

In captivity, bettas are conditioned by having the male and female put beside one another in SEPERATE tanks for a few days until the female is full of eggs and ready to mate before the two fish are put together.  Sometimes, even so one or both the fish are injured during spawning if it is not a good match.  By keeping your fish together you are risking serious injury to one or both of them.

  8. You can only put them together for mating, and they way you introduce them is complicated and the male will try and mate with her and if she is unwilling, he will kill her, so no you can not out them together unless mating. If you plant to mate, do LOTS of research, it is very hard!!!!

If you do not introduce them correctly the will kill eachother, and if you do introduce them correctly and they mate and the male puts the eggs in a bubblenest, he will kill the female if she is in the same tank as him with the eggs, so they have to be separated after spawning.

  9. NO betta fish are very aggressive. your friend is right. they should only be placed together for spawning (and if they are too aggressive they should be separated before it is over) and  once the male is done spawning with the female she should be removed.

    you should research the fish.
