  1. yea you definitely have to till it first. No way around it

  2. You can put the new turf straight on top of the old no problem. If there are any weeds present it is better to give them a touch up first. Give at least  five days to work, level out if required, lay the turf on top and keep the moisture up to it

  3. If you put sod over the existing grass, there will be a gap between the two, killing your new sod.  Roto-till!

  4. another option could be to spot seed where you need it if the existing grass is not completely dead, as for weeds you can fertilize a few weeks after sprouting,

if you don't roto till the sod will only last for a day or two, so it would not be a good shortcut.

  5. No offense, I LOVE "CAN I?" questions. The answer is usually certainly, with an added,,, BUT you may not be satisfied.

In some measure it depends on why you want to do this, the condition of the current GRASS, any notion as to soil composition, any leveling issues, weed issues, currently installed irrigation plumbing, height issues as they relate to adjoining areas, etc.

  6. In my laziness I have done this. But it started to rain immediately after I finished. It worked out very good.
