Jeff Healey plays that way and he is blind on top of that. Don't forget that a dobro is actually a type of guitar with a distinctive sound of its own.

You can use the slide in your leads but not necessarily all the time. If you have a chance, watch Jeff Healey videos. He's a good singer and is often in many movies playing with his band usually.
