can i also lie on the personal essay, say i went hrough life changing experiences like death, or war or something really dramatic to make me look great. my friend had a crazy life, and it got her into a college. i also want to lie on the extra curricular stuff and work experience, cause ive never had a job. but i have great grades, so thats fine, but thats kinda all i really got. so is it just fine if i lie that ive been part of many clubs, or perhaps captain of the girls soccer varsity team, is that fine if i do? and if i get away with it, do i have to ever fear being caught.

  1. sometimes they actually check.

for example, you only got 600 on your sat math but if you write down you are a silver medalist in international math olympiad, they will check.

  2. you could i wouldnt advise it. as long as they dont call your school or anything like that you wont get caught. you probably just dont want anyone else to see your application that knows you because they will probably call u on it. you are basically cheating but if u get caught instead of having some chance to get in, u will have no chance.

  3. In short - No. If you lie, you can and will get caught out. Also, be aware that lying is not an original thought - college tutors have heard it all before. But...why bother to make up a story when you have exciting and good ones that actually happened?

    Remember when...

You read the first book that made you want to get a hobby?

You heard the first band that made you want to play a musical instument to that level?

You got inspired by hearing someone's story to find out more about a subject?

THOSE are the things that are inspiring. They were real events that could have (and probably did) happen to you. Lies are not as interesting as the truth, and remember -  if you're shown to be a liar, you'll not be considered trustworthy.

  4. Captain of the girls soccer varsity team? Are you crazy, of course you can't say that. Colleges will look back at your high school years and if they can't find anything related to a varsity soccer team, then you are screwed. You don't have to lie to get into a good college. Just be honest and tell them what really happened. And if you don't have anything good to say, then it's pretty much your fault.

There are many students who made great achievements and experienced many things throughout their life. I don't think it would be fair for a person to lie just because those things didn't happen to them.

  5. Yes you can lie. And if you get caught, you can get thrown out. And please don't come to me looking for a job, because you have absolutely no integrity or honor.

  6. A lie is still a LIE.  It's cheating.  It's wrong.  It's disgusting.  You should be ashamed of yourself for even thinking about cheating like this.  Don't you have any respect for yourself?  Why don't you actually do some of the things you want to lie about?

I don't even know you, yet I'm so disappointed in you.  I feel so let down by this post that I'm going to log off and go to bed.  I don't even feel like being here any more.
