is it possable and safe

yea it is but make sure u put in the correct amount of carbon and foam and other filter materials according to ur tank size. also make sure you're using a configuration according to what your tank needs. there are a lot of these filter supplies at petsmart and u can put them where the water enters the filter. you can also use the foam and carbon from the popular external filters which is better. for the filter's case i'd make sure it's nice and leak free cause the last thing you would want is a leak.

A+ to the betta lover. I personally think that a store-bought filter would probably work more affectively but it might be fun to try.
