  1. Use a V.92 dial-up modem.

    V.92 incorporates advanced compression protocols that will speed-up the dial-up process and some downloads, due to the compression algorithms used.

    V.92 modems also incorporate the MOH feature (Modem on Hold), which allows you to take incoming phone calls while surfing (puts surf on hold while talking on phone).

    Obviously, you won't get the same results as highspeed, but it will give you better performance than the old V.90 Standard.

You cannot make calls with a dial up modem and get any sort of voice quality.  The 56 K modem actually runs at 52 K maximum; using a VoIP G7.11 codex for voice calls can require up to approx. 175 K for good quality duplex voice transmission.  Using less intense codex will result in distorted voice but uses less bandwidth - so voice quality also suffers.
