Have to disagree with the mechanic.  Many minivans are built around a car chassis, not a truck.  That's why they have such a smooth ride.

Do what your owner's manual says to do.

if it says your van won't tow, don't.  

If it says it can, then stay within the specified capacity.

Otherwise, your transmission will be toast in no time, assuming you don't smash into something when the brakes fail to stop the rig.

This is one case when you really need to take the manual seriously.  Lives are at stake.

Yes.  depending on the minivan.  All will handle over 1500 lbs - even without a trailer towing package.  (a 17ft runabout with room for six and a 70 hp motor is under 1000 lbs, and the trailer is only a couple hundred).  With a trailer towing package, some will handle over 3500 lbs (very large two wheel trailer, many four wheel trailers).

Do not take the thermostat out.  Very BAD advice.

Do read the owners manual about towing a trailer.

If the transmission selector has OD and D settings (or similar) use the D setting when towing.  The engine will rev a little higher, and provide more engine braking for slowing down, reducing the stress on your brakes.

a mini-van can tow any thing a small truck can while going up hills or mountains keep it in drive the overdrive bands are not designed to run under a heavy load and this will eventually cause damage to your transmission.

You don't have to take the thermostat out, and yes your van can pull a boat and a jet ski.  Your owners manual will tell you the towing capacity of your van, a jet ski with trailer weighs approx. 500 pounds a 19' boat approx. 2500 pounds.  Just rememer when towing anything make sure its strapped down securely because any sudden stop can cause it flip off of the trailer so tie it down.

It sure can if it has one of those round things on the back of it because jet skiing trailers are small(depending on which one you get).

Yeah, a mini-van will tow small items. Check your owners manual, probably up to 2000 lbs.

But don't forget: that includes all the gear you load down the boat with.
