  1. Shady Side! What a nice area to live in.

As a preschool teacher, I'm always looking for someone who can be a reliable, knowledgeable, volunteer. I'm sure there are preschools in the area that would love to have you.

I would start by looking for NAEYC Accredited Preschools. NAEYC Accreditation takes a large commitment on the preschool's part.

Here's a website that lists some preschools in the Pittsburgh area:

    http://pittsburgh.about.com/od/daycare_c...

The University of Pittsburgh runs its own Child Development Center and has a hugely diverse population of staff and children. Many of the children are ESL Students (English as a Second Language). I  bet they would LOVE to have someone with your background volunteering in the preschool.

Be prepared that most preschools will most likely ask you to get Child Abuse, Criminal Record or FBI Clearances. This has nothing to do with you on a personal level, it's just a matter of security. Many elementary schools in my area (about 80 miles north of Pittsburgh) are requiring the same thing.

I hope you find a nice preschool to volunteer at!

  2. Check out the Kentucky Avenue school, in the basement of the third Presbyterian Church.

They are a very interesting school with an open approach, and a multicultural and social focus, and they are right around the corner from you.
