  1. As everyone has said, you can certainly paint them.  However, remember the old adage, "There is a place in h**l for people who paint brick".  Why?  It is nearly impossible to un-paint brick.

If the brick surface is relatively flat (no stepped bricks under the mantle, that sort of thing), consider instead tiling over the brick with granite or marble tile.  You get a new, slick look, and it can be any color you want, plus it is totally heat-proof.  I know of homeowners who have done this themselves.  You rent a wet saw, and go to town.  Impress your friends!

  2. Yes, you can.  If you use the fireplace, you'll want to ask a paint specialist what type of paint with cover well and tolerate the heat.  Alternatively, you could find ceramic or marble tile and cover the brick.

  3. You could definately do that, I've seen it on a lot of remodeling shows. There are a bunch of ideas here: http://www.homebedazzle.com/fireplace.ht... I'm sure if you go to your library or home improvement center, there will be many books on remodeling ideas, including how to revamp your fireplace.

  4. You can paint them.  I don't know if there is any fire resistant paint out there, but ask the person you buy the paint from.  They should know the best kind to use.

  5. Sure you can, I suggest that you first thoroughly clean the brick, apply a quality primer and then use two coats of your finish color.

  6. yes

  7. Depending on what color you do the walls it might either make the brick look good..or bad. So listen..[or read lol]

Look at the bricks themselves and see if you can find a brick-red or rust color you like. Earth tones could work, and the right rusts or brick reds will enliven the woodwork if you have it and work well with the bricks. Greens in the olive family are usually good too. Adobe clay colors would be fine if you need a lighter color.

A lot of people stay away from darker wall colors because they think they make the room look small and claustrophobic, not so. Sometimes they can make a small room feel so much nicer to be in.

Hoped i helped at all :)
