I have this great idea for a feature for cell phones (and no im not going to tell you what it is so someone can steal it)

By feature i mean like for example some phones send text messages, that would be a feature.

So assume my idea is good, is there a way to patent something like that and if so, how?

  1. No.

  2. It depends on whether or not you can describe your idea  sufficiently to enable someone to build a device that practices your idea.  In other words, a patent can be used to protect ideas.  But, in order to get a patent you must be able to describe how to make and use the idea.  A patent basically operates as a quid pro quo, where you provide the public (via the patent office) with a description of your idea and how someone could make (or build) it and in return the patent office gives you a patent.   Once you file a patent with the patent office, they will then examine your application to ensure you have described your idea well enough that someone could actually implement it as well as examine it to ensure it is both novel and non-obvious.  If, however, you have just a generic idea and no concept how to actually build it, then you will not be able to patent it.

  3. I have many great ideas that things that cant even be made yet, "technology doesnt exist yet". You can patent an idea in case if the technology comes along or someone else thinks of it too you have first dibs and they owe you royalties because your idea was the original. Having a patent is the written proof that yours is the genuine article. Call the government patent office and request a packet to submit a patent. Make sure you are very thorough and clear so there isnt any misunderstandings and try to include lots of drawings too.

  4. No, you cannot patent an idea.

  5. Yes, if you know how to make an use the invention and can describe it with enough detail that one of ordinary skill in the art could make and use the invention without undue experimentation.

I'm not sure what you mean by how.  You file a patent application, thats how.  You should hire a patent agent or lawyer and have them draft and file the application for you.
