I used to work in a pool hall and there was a lot of down time.  Some days I would play against myself in 8-ball, trying to hit either stripes or solids before making a mistake.  Other days, I would just work on my english, jumps, trick shots or other specific skills.  Playing pool by yourself can also be a social activity.  Some people may look at you like you're crazy, but others will approach you and ask you if you'd like to play a game.  I have quite a few friends whom I met while playing pool by myself.
