  1. I read that most of the top All Blacks , learned their skills from just running round and kicking a ball around their back yards, when kids.

  2. If you are not already familiar with the New Zealand player Dan Carter perhaps you would be interested to know that his father built him a goal post in the vacant section next to there house and Dan Carter would practice everyday perfecting his kicking abilities all on his own. Im not quite sure at what age Dan was when his father built the goal posts but it was when he was very young. You can do a certain amount on your own like ensuring you have good diet and exercise regimes, plenty of sleep, rest etc, but the sport is indeed a team sport and you will require the skill and guidance of a coach.

Little stars grow up to big bright shining ones! good luck bro!

  3. Depends, mostly what position you play,

If you play prop, there is not much you can do with a ball on your own, jogging and push ups and even weights if you are old enough (not before the age of 16), this will make you stronger to make it around the pitch, a fit prop stands out and will be noticed.

Same for second row, although when  i played second row i used a basketball program called "Air Alert", it showed you exercises to do to improve your vertical jump so i old get a better jump for my lifters. I'm sure you could Google the program you don't need any equipment, and it improved my vertical jump by 4 inches, it also strengthens your calf and leg muscles

Back Row, try mixing the exercises for the prop and second row, but try with a bit more sprinting over 50 meters with ball in hand. Also practice your passing, don't try and force the "perfect" pass as long as you can throw accurately you'll have more success. Being a flanker or No. 8 requires a range of skills. When i changed to flanker i found that my handling skills had to improve and so did my fitness. you have to be quicker around the field than a front five player. I spent hours over the last year running and sprinting to get myself to a Strong level.

once heard "  a flanker is not tough enough to be a forward but not skillful enough to be a back" flankers have a roll to themselves.

for the backs i suppose that you can spend hours practicing with the ball, kicking to touch or goal kicking. there is a lot more sprinting you can do and encompass side stepping into your sprints. the modern back too is strong enough to try and mix it with the forwards, so push ups wont do you any harm.

one of the scrum haves i played with in school played international schools level, he had a very strange way to practice training, he stuck an old basketball hoop on the end of a long stick, kinda like a big looking lolly pop, after each team training he would go home without changing and spend the next hour passing through the hoop on his own. he would stick it in the ground at different heights and pass the ball through until he was happy. Then when we played he just pictured the hoop to pass through, very accurate player. Our school decided that it was a good idea they decided to have some made in different sizes for all teams to work with. its great to improve passing, you can run back and forth picturing a scenario and passing the ball throw, or even from the ground to the fly-half (picture the base of a ruck) it'll also teach you to keep the ball a tight spiral, works for positions especially backs.

simple exercise and a bit of creativity for your position, and mostly commitment as it is very hard to work alone consistently, but if you do so your game will improve. double the work needs to be done in the off season, its not a rest time, its a training time where you build on your current fitness in the gym and on the field to make a big impression at the start of the new season when others may have taken the time off.......best of luck man
